I have trained my eye to not see dresses or skirts that fall above, or even to, the knee. Louis Vuitton was all about the A-line mini this season? Didn't notice. Saint Laurent did mini-slip dresses? Sorry, I can't hear you.
The truth is I no longer have the legs, as they say (strangely), and such garments make me feel like an uprooted Christmas tree. Now I have eyes only for "the midi". Handily - leggily, even - in recent times the mid-length dresses has become less the middle-aged choice and more the fashionably feminine one, thanks to its wholehearted embrace by the likes of Phoebe Philo and Stella McCartney. Thinking about it, these chicks are both middle-aged themselves, so this may be no coincidence. And I'm sure they're more than wise to the fact that the over-40s and the 50- and 60-somethings, who are, after all, the people who can actually afford their clothes, might be rather thrilled by an array of garments in this length. Plus they make them look so attractive while they're at it. Perhaps I'm biased but don't you think it's more sophisticated to wear a mid-length dress rather than a shortie - amazing legs or not? In the office or at a wedding, it's less try-hard, and less hard work. Something floating around the calf region will reveal Just Enough Leg: not so much you have to worry about whether your fake tan is flawless from tippy-toe to knicker line, just enough to not look as if you've frumped-out. It's very adaptable, too. If you feel you need to add length to your legs, show as much foot as possible with strappy sandals or shallow, pointed courts. But if you want to look trendy or - as Phoebe Philo mentioned with regard to her mid-length skirts for next season - reminiscent of a Northern Soul girl, simply wear with trainers or lace-up flats. To see how many are around, go to your favourite fashion website and enter midi-dress/skirt in the search box. You'll be amazed how much fabulous stuff comes up. Really, there's no shame in the middle ground. |
